Orthopädietechnikermeister und -meisterinnen arbeiten in Betrieben des Orthopädietechnikerhandwerks und übernehmen dort verantwortliche Führungs- und Fachaufgaben. Hauptsächlich liegt ihr Tätigkeitsbereich in Werkstätten von Krankenhäusern und Rehabilitationseinrichtungen sowie in Sanitätshäusern. Gefertigt werden hier die verschiedensten orthopädischen Hilfsmittel, die den Bedürfnissen der Kunden angepasst werden müssen. Auf ärztliche Anordnungen werden zum Beispiel künstliche Gliedmaßen (Prothesen), spezielle Bandagen oder Korsetts hergestellt - aber auch Erzeugnisse der Reha-Technik wie Rollstühle und dergleichen werden gefertigt. Orthopädietechnikermeister beraten Ihre Kunden bei der Wahl der passenden Hilfsmittel, reparieren Produkte und weisen die Kunden in die Bedienung und Handhabung ein. Der Beruf des Orthopädietechnikermeister bzw. der Orthopädietechnikermeisterin ist ein anerkannter Beruf. Die Zulassung zur Meisterprüfung unterliegt der Handwerksordnung und ist eine berufliche Weiterbildung. Eine Vorbereitung zur Meisterprüfung für den Orthopädietechnikermeister bzw. die Orthopädietechnikermeisterin ist durch Teilnahme an entsprechenden Vorbereitungslehrgängen möglich. Diese dauern in Vollzeit ein Jahr und in Teilzeit rund drei Jahre. Eine Verpflichtung zur Teilnahme besteht allerdings nicht.
